This book is arranged in two sections, the first being the larger. This section is titled Letters to Ann, and is arranged chronologically from the 1970s to 1986. All but two of the letters pre-date Sister Wendy's emergence as the Art Nun, following the 16 yrs or so immediatly following her transfer from the life of an active, teaching Order to that of a hermit, conscrated by the Bishop of the diocese for solitary prayer on behalf of the Church. These leters uniquely capture the release of spiritual energy that followed her release into her long-desired goal. Ann was a religious Sister with whom Sister Wendy could feel at ease. The second group of letters has an entirely different origin, and consists of exchanges of notes between Sister Wendy and some of the nuns of the Carmelite Monastery on whose property she now lives. Each note is a response to a question asked or of a reflection shared. In both sections, the desire for the highest spiritual ideals shine through. In 305pp. Apart from her celebrity status as 'the art nun', generated by her television programmes, Sister Wendy has been approached throughout her life for counsel on the spiritual life and the life of prayer. Here, for the first time, are collected some of the finest of her responses in the form of letters, kept and treasured by their receipients over the years. Sister Wendy herself has written a charming and very personal autobiographical preface in which she sets these letters in their context. This little book is a treasure trove of wisdom and sound simple advice.
