Frances Young OBE, FBA is Emeritus Proessor of Theology and formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor, University of Birmingham. The book includes an adaptation and enlargement of a paper Professor Young gave at much the same time at a conference entitled For Us and Our Salvation. The chapters are titled 1) Passover and passion; 2) Scapegoat and sacrifice; 3) Tree of life; 4) Signs, symbols and serpents; and 5) Language, liturgy and life. Her Final Word reflects of the paradox that whether construed as a sacrifice or as a gallows-tree, the cross becomes a sign of life renewed, and only God's creative grace could effect it.
